Firefox 3 is out! Expectations?
Posted by mkhairul - June 18, 2008 at 09:06:24 am - 2 CommentsCategories: blog
One important thing I expect from Firefox 3 is the memory usage. How will it fare with Firefox 3? Previously on Firefox 2, opening up 5 tabs (Google Personalized Homepage, reddit, etc) for a whole day will at least use 400-500MB of RAM. That is alot for idling.
Hope FF3 does better, haven’t had the chance to read its feature list and changelog.
Creating excel file for download

There is a problem with CI’s excel plugin. It generates a tab delimited file and download it as an excel file. But when I open it up using Excel, it says the file is in a different format. So it is NOT an excel file.
The problem of it not being an Excel file is that, the file that is to be downloaded is supposed to be fed on to another application (written in ASP.NET) and the application just outright refuses it. So, a colleague suggest to me that he will copy the contents into an excel file and uploaded it, which defeats the purpose of a system.

How to open .docx file in OpenOffice 2.3? (in Windows)
Posted by mkhairul - June 5, 2008 at 08:06:33 pm - 2 CommentsCategories: Tips
As I was trying to resume my work, I realized I have a .docx that I needed to open, most of the info is in there. The problem is I don’t use Microsoft Office, I’m using OpenOffice 2.3. Googled around a bit and found, Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.
Installed it without any problems, there’s no shortcut or anything to run the program. I double-clicked the .docx file and it runs the Microsoft Open XML Converter and I can save it to .doc format. After saving it, I double-clicked the .doc file and the converter runs again, trying to convert it into another format.
Went to the properties of the file and change the Opens with to OpenOffice Writer. Finally, I can resume my work.
Where have I been?

Been two weeks since I last updated. I have been busy with work and playing Magic the Gathering on weekends. Other than that, most ideas and thoughts were poured on two twitter. http://twitter.com/mkhairul.
This week is just a week of troubles. Problem rise from below like a party organized by Necromancers. I’d be doing some load and stress test tomorrow and try to calculate the bandwidth usage (and requirements) and resources for each users. Other than that, trying to locate the point of failure in some applications (our biggest suspect is that we didn’t optimize the database yet).
I’ve had a few ideas noted down in my google notebook on what to blog about but haven’t gotten around to write it.
