Oh Despair! Problematic ATI RADEON 9550!

Categories: Troubleshoot

ATI

I‘ve been having this problem for quite some time, the pc just restarts when I play a game (3D game) for too long. Its driving me nuts.

My graphic card is PowerColor ATI RADEON 9550 256MB

Here’s the story..

First! I used the catalyst drivers from download.com, Catalyst 6.7 (teh latest!), I start up the game, after 30 minutes or so.. the PC starts to change the resolution/freeze and reboots.

Second! I thought, maybe ATI makes crappy drivers.. (catalyst), so I tried the modded drivers called Omega Drivers, woot!, I get to play like 45 minutes before something crappy happens and it always ends it reboot.

So.. I took a journey on ATI-RADEON-9550-enlightenment, I sail the world wide web with my trusty firefox… Behold! I found a huge thread, Problems with ATI Radeon 9600 PRO (Solved), read like half of it, and skim the rest of it… too long.

Some suggest this.. some suggest that, there’s like a thousands of combination, so I decided to test with the drivers, BIOS settings is risky. I stumbled upon neowin.net’s forum (DH zer0point drivers (ATI/nVidia)), from that forum, someone suggested to use Tweaks R Us drivers… wth? another driver?

Finally, I asked a friend, how? how to settle this stupid problem? He told me just use the windows default Add/Remove Hardware (dont use the setup for all those drivers, catalyst, omega etc). Specify a location for the driver where you .inf files are located (most probably in the CD that came with the card), and behoooooold! Plain old graphics, with no advance tweak that and this.

  1. Yes the thread on my Geek site has grown to unmanageable proportions. Basically, my conclusion from it all is simple: The main reason for the issues is small system incompatibilities. Bad PSUs seem to be another big reason. Thermal problems might be another reason. Or badly-compatible RAM, and so on. Hard to debug, all in all. I always used the ATI drivers. MS Windows doesn’t include anything else, either, just isn’t as cutting edge. Hacked drivers (Omega and so on) are generally a bad idea IMO.

  2. These little incompatibilities are hard to troubleshoot, I dont have the resources to test each and every one of them.

Some drivers let me play games longer than others but still the end result are the same. Freeze and Reboot.

My advice to others would be to build a PC with proven compatible combinations. Arstechnica(http://arstechnica.com/guides.ars) , Tomshardware… and other sites have info and specs on building PCs.
